Step 6: Certification: Please indicate if you would like a Certified Diamond, then click Next. You may read more about Certification below.
Diamond certificates, also known as diamond grading reports or dossiers, are prepared by independent, certified gemologists from respected laboratories around the world and identify the unique characteristics of the diamond.
What's Included in a Diamond Grading Report?
A diamond grading report typically includes the following information:
- A diagram of the diamond with inclusions plotted
- The 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, carat weight)
- Exact measurements
- Depth percentages
- Polish grade
- Symmetry grade
Characteristics like fluorescence, graining, and other unique properties of the diamond, if present, are also addressed.
Does a Certificate Increase the Value of the Diamond?
Certification of a diamond does not increase the value of the diamond. Certification is only documentation of the diamond's authenticity and characteristics, but is, nonetheless, a valuable and important document. For instance, should you ever decide to upgrade the diamond, it will be helpful to have the certificate to verify the diamond's quality. Please note that a grading certificate is not the same as an appraisal, as appraisals include a statement of the retail value.
Some well-known organizations that provide grading reports include, but are not limited to, the American Gemological Society (AGS), Diamond High Council (HRD), European Gemological Laboratory (EGL), International Gemological Institute (IGI), and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA).
